The Aim and Objective of this page is to analyse Genre and Auter, I willl do this by looking at examples of each and linking them back to my chosen Genre.
Quentin Tarantino
GENRE
DEFINITION
'A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter''
EXPLANATION
Films can fall under different Genres such as Horror, Social Realism, Romantic comedies and Documentaries. The genre is important to a film as it has to follow conventions and traditional forms. An example of this would be in a horror movie, some of the conventions include an Isolated location, Female victim and a Dark/shadowy location.
DRAMA
DEFINITION-
'A drama film is a film genre that depends mostly on in-depth development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes'.
EXPLANATION
My case study within the 'Drama' genre would be 'Natural Born Killers' as it mirrors the techniques needed within the 'Drama' genre conventions. I will use this film genre when creating my film as I can apply the realistic style to the drama genre and develop and Realist-Drama which is something I am keen to develop. I will use a realistic setting, use depth of field and long shots which allows me to resemble to realistic approach but present it in a Dramatic exaggerated form.
REALISM
DEFINITION-
'The relationship between particular mass media forms/examples and the "reality" that is being represented.'
EXPLANATION
Realist films attempt to re create reality. They attempt to be as life like and natural they could possibly be in order to show that the events or problems that were created in the film could had actually happened. One of the aims for a realist film maker is to try and be audience centred, which means that the audience should attempt to interpret the meaning behind the film instead of it being spoon fed to you.
A Realist film's style will usually be very simple, for example most of the film will be shot on location instead of a studio set as this is partly the reality they are trying to present to the audience. The camera shots often are put together to look as natural as possible- almost as if the camera was just there ready and waiting to capture the action. Most of the shots have greater depth of field, this shows a more or less view of the background, the middle and the front of the camera so that everyone would be in the shot at the same time, just like real life would be if it were actually happening. Occasionally these shots seem to be hectic or un tidy but their purpose is to force your brain and thoughts into participating more in thinking about what is going on in order to explore the complex and complicated shots.
Documentaries are a good example of Realist cinema as they are usually in the Realist nature as their aim is to document something which actually happened and try and portray them in the most straight forward way without having to manipulate the shot or camera to make it look particularly artistic in any way. When you watch Realist films you are meant to feel like you are actually there as an observer.
My case study linking to this would be 'Fridge' as it follows the conventions of the realism genre for example, It is set in a realistic location, a working class estate, it uses depth of field in order to show the setting of the film and background shots. When you watch 'Fridge' the audience feels like they are watching a short documentary as by use of cinematography and editing, the audience feels that they are sat behind the camera on set.
SOCIAL REALISM
DEFINITION -
'Social Realism, also known as Socio-Realism, is an artistic movement, expressed in the visual and other realist arts, which depicts social and racial injustice, economic hardship, through unvarnished pictures of life's struggles; often depicting working class activities as heroic'
EXPLANATION
It is known to be 'typically British', and has shaped our ideologies of what British cinema is capable of producing. The most common conventions of a Social Realist film are : Working class heroes, Economic hardship, Realistic settings, Realistic situations and urban. Themes such as drugs, crime, alcoholism, money and sex are often quite common in modern social realism as well as religion and class. The main forms and conventions of social realism are; the use of unknown actors. Class and locations are predominantly working class, usually set in a council estate or various run down areas. I would enjoy basing my film on social realism as I feel that their are not that many limits as to what you could do. Many topical and interesting stories (of social realism) come from true real life experiences, i feel this gives the piece more depth and allows the audience to avoid ignorance in the bubble of middle class society we life in today.
Examples include:
AUTER
DEFINITION
'An artist (as a musician or writer) whose style and practice are distinctive'
EXPLANATION
'Auter' translated into English means "Author".
1.My first case study Auter would be Quentin Tarantino from 'Natural Born Killers'. He uses language to communicate meaning to the audience, the importance of Dialogue is a key element as it 'Hails' the audience by using Syntax to explain his point of view. An example of this would be, in 'Reservoir Dogs' (1992) the introduction includes the men in black sitting round a table, smoking and drinking coffee discussing Madonna's song 'Like a Virgin', the audience cant help but be incited into analysing what the scene is trying to communicate and the depth of analysis they proceed with.
The next few photos will further explain his typical shots
1. The Trunk and Hood POV shot is common among Quinten Tarentino's Technical Characteristics.
2. Black and White shots
3. Extreme close up of lips
4.Mirror reflections
5.Foot Motif Shots

2. My second Case study Auter would be Shane Meadows from 'This is England'. Meadows is most recognised for his Realism film's and the motifs within these, for example he most commonly uses realistic actors to portray realism, alongside 'This is England' he has also created films such as 'Dead Mans shoes', 'Northern Soul', and 'Somers Town. The locations of Meadows films have become essential and recognised as they usually are set in the Northern part of England in areas such as the Midlands and Nottingham.
Here are some shots that I found whilst researching, the location from the area that 'This is England' is shot on. These working class areas of Northern England have become typical traits of Shane Meadows.
Location: Nottingham
3. My Third case study Auter would be Peter Mullan from Fridge. Mullen first began his career in acting after graduating from University, he had roles in films such as 'Trainspotting' 'Braveheart' and 'Shallow Grave' and in TV shows such as 'My name is Joe' 'On a clear day' and 'Boy A'. He then began directing films, his first full length film 'Orphans' won an award at the Venice film festival. Since then, Mullen has directed films such as 'Fridge' in 1995, 'Orphans' in 1998, 'The Magdalene Sisters' in 2002 and 'Neds' in 2010.
